The Peach Blossom Land was a fable written by Tao Yuanming in 421 CE about a chance discovery of an ethereal utopia where the people lead an ideal existence in harmony with nature, unaware of the outside world for centuries. The phrase can be used to describe idealistic place of beauty and repose.

POKIN POKIN is a claw machine store located in Scarborough Town Centre, conceived as a whimsical, story-driven retail space inspired by a fairy-tale castle. The interior design utilizes two signature colours, lavender and beige, to create a soft, dreamlike atmosphere that evokes childhood imagination while remaining warm and approachable. The layout is carefully planned through thoughtful space programming to accommodate both product display and prize redemption areas, ensuring a smooth and intuitive circulation path for customers and efficient operation for staff. A cosy corner positioned at the front of the store is designed to resemble a child’s bedroom, setting an inviting and nostalgic tone that draws visitors into the space. By fully utilizing the existing storefront glazing, the design enhances visibility and engagement from the mall corridor, while a reimagined, oversized claw machine acts as a giant functional installation—serving as a bold visual statement, an interactive attraction, and a unique brand identity feature that transforms the store into an immersive play experience.

Auntie Dessert presents the first interior in the Toronto area inspired by the refined aesthetics of the Chinese Song Dynasty, offering a contemporary interpretation of traditional Eastern design within a Western urban context. Rooted in the Song Dynasty’s principles of restraint, balance, and poetic spatial composition, the project avoids overt ornamentation in favor of subtle cultural expression and material authenticity. Walnut is used extensively to introduce warmth, nostalgia, and a sense of timeless calm, while custom mural wall coverings reference classical Chinese art as a quiet narrative backdrop. A deliberate intervention blocks a portion of the storefront glazing to partially reveal weekly dessert ingredients, creating intrigue through concealment and reinforcing the experiential value of anticipation. The reception area is conceived as a space-within-a-space, marked by the integration of traditional Chinese roof tiles overhead, serving as both a cultural symbol and a visual landmark that draws attention from the exterior. Lantern-inspired pendant lighting discreetly punctuates the interior, and a high-contrast lighting strategy elevates the atmosphere, establishing a refined, high-end environment for social gathering. Through restrained materiality, layered spatial sequencing, and nuanced cultural references, Auntie Dessert bridges Eastern heritage and contemporary design, redefining how traditional Chinese aesthetics are experienced in a modern dining setting.
